Have one or both of your eyes been irritated and scratchy lately? If so, you may well be suffering from dry eye. Dry eye is a very common condition that can be easily treated. However if you do not see our optometrist in Sebastopol for diagnosis and treatment, dry eye could go on to ultimately cause serious eye problems.
At our practice, Dr. Shipley & Associates, our expert optometrists are: Dr. Les Shipley, Dr. Margot Shipley, and Dr. Nicole Wood. Many patients will come in to see our optometrist in Sebastopol with eye problems that end up being diagnosed as dry eye. Dry eye generally results from an improper balance of tear production and the tear drainage in the eye. There may be an inadequate amount of tears produced, or the tears that are produced can be of a quality too poor to allow them to do their job effectively. Or tears may drain out of the eye too quickly before they can effectively do their jobs. Dry eye can be caused by changes to the eyes or by environmental situations.
When a patient comes to see our optometrist in Sebastopol with dry eye symptoms, our optometrist will first need to determine exactly what is causing the dry eye condition. Based on this diagnosis, an appropriate treatment will be determined. Treatments can vary greatly, and will depend on exactly what needs to be done to correct the problem. The most common cause of dry eye is an inadequate amount of water in the tears. Symptoms can include irritated, scratchy, or burning eyes. Patients may also feel as though they have something in the eye. If dry eye is not treated, the front part of the eye can be scratched and damaged, and vision can be impaired. Treatment will work to restore the amount of tears in the eyes. This can be done with over-the-counter eye drops to add tears; prescription eye drops to increase the production of tears; having the tear ducts blocked with tiny plugs to reduce drainage; or in the most serious case, a surgical procedure will be done to permanently close the tear ducts. Other treatment options are also available. If you would like to meet with our optometrist to see if you have dry eye, contact us for an appointment.
